Lack of Independent Security Verification in South Korea's Central Bank CBDC Pilot

According to data from the Financial Supervisory Service of South Korea, during the first phase of the CBDC pilot project led by the Bank of Korea, financial authorities did not conduct any independent security verification; instead, participating banks performed their own pre-security assessments. Before the project commenced, only an IT vulnerability self-assessment was conducted for the participating banks, executed by a joint inspection team from the Financial Security Institute, SK Shields, and Woori Bank and NongHyup Bank, forming an evaluation model of "self-checking by the regulated entities." In the pilot results report, the Bank of Korea acknowledged external concerns regarding the security of deposit tokens and responded that the pre-assessment was sufficient. However, critics pointed out that this explanation is a form of self-assessment and not an independent third-party verification.
