Korean Retail Investors Increase High-Leverage CFD Positions to 3.3 Trillion Won
As of July 21, the scale of contracts for difference (CFD) positions in South Korea has increased to approximately 3.3 trillion won, a nearly two-thirds increase from last year. SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics have become the main leveraged betting targets for retail investors, with SK Hynix's CFD positions surging nearly 2,500% to 235 billion won, and Samsung Electronics' positions expanding to about 217 billion won, five times the previous amount. CFDs allow investors to gain exposure to the underlying asset's risk by paying only about 40% of the margin, without actually holding the stocks. Analysts point out that a market downturn could trigger margin calls, leading to the sale of physical stocks held by banks, thereby exacerbating market volatility. There are concerns that the risks associated with CFDs, combined with margin trading and leveraged ETFs, could create a chain reaction of forced liquidations during market adjustments. The Korea Capital Market Institute stated that if a large number of leveraged positions are concentrated in the same direction and investors are unable to meet margin calls, forced liquidations will further intensify market volatility. In 2023, concentrated retail CFD positions in South Korea led to multiple stocks hitting their daily price limits and prompted regulatory interventions. Analysts believe that as retail investors increase high-leverage trading again, similar risks will once again attract market attention.
